Managing Holiday Stress
A Message from Dr. Julie:
Reducing Stress Naturally
The statement that “stress kills” is true, but it’s always important to remember that you have the power to limit its impacts. Stress can damage a person’s health in ways that can be irreversible, including heart problems, long-term disability, and early aging. There are some who believe that stress, the right amount, can make a person feel better. The truth is stress can cause individuals to make mistakes, and life is filled with situations that can increase a person’s stress level.
I believe one of the secrets to healthier living is to find ways to reduce stress naturally. During times of high-stress, it can be easy to forget that you have the ultimate control over your own mind. It’s important to practice de-stressing tools during times of less stress, so that they become instinctual in the moments when it can be hard to think or focus.
  • Keep the mind focused on positive things: think of your grandchildren, your dog, your favorite sports victory. It doesn’t have to be large or impactful; sometimes the most joy can come from the smallest moments.
  • Avoid the company of negative people, or even too much negative news. Consider starting your day with a few self-affirmations.
  • Spend quality time with family members or friends.
  • Take walks and adopt a regular exercise routine.
  • Limit your caffeine intakes, and consider swapping out a few of your daily cups of java for herbal tea. In today’s modern world, there seems to be a coffee house on every corner. While it is easy to think that such venues have a way of helping reduce stress, caffeine increases adrenaline levels – the very hormone that we should work to reduce.
  • Eat smaller meals more often throughout the day. This helps to reduce the body’s blood sugar levels. Focusing on eating smaller meals more frequently can help prevent over-eating and can provide a level of control during times when we feel helpless. Be sure to load up these small meals with proteins and brain-boosting fats. Avoid sugar as much as possible.
  • Practice belly breathing. Proper breathing can also produce healthy results – in the brain and beyond! It is one of the simplest methods you can adopt to reduce stress naturally.
  • Talk to people who will listen. Being heard and understood by people that truly care can go a long way in helping reduce stress even if they cannot help physically.
  • Seek professional help for effective therapies and counseling on how to reduce stress naturally.
There are several ways chiropractic can help relieve stress. Chiropractors work to reduce the tension in the muscles and restore proper functionality to the body through spinal adjustments. Your spine is the information highway between your body and your brain, and it’s critical to keep it free of roadblocks. Our office also offers nutritional counseling to keep your body and brain properly fueled. Lastly, if you’ve been wondering if neurofeedback therapy might be right for you, now is a great time to get into the office and start exploring your options.
